DES MOINES, Iowa - Megan Gingerich
and Tyler Carter
posted strong marks on Friday as the Eastern Illinois track and field team opened competition at the Drake Relays. EIU will continue action at the event on Saturday with a small group while the remaining Panthers will compete at the Stan Lyons Invite in Indianapolis.
Gingerich finished fifth in the 800m run at the Drake Relays in a very fast field. Gingerich posted a season best time of 2:07.32 which was just a second off her school record set last season.
Carter placed sixth in the long jump as he cleared 24'8.25" at the event. The jump ranks as the ninth best in EIU history as Carter passed John Craft on the career top ten list.
EIU had three relay teams in action on Friday. The men's 4x200 relay team placed fifth with a time of 1:26.78. The relay team was comprised of Darren Patterson
, Jacob Mitchell
, Patrick Tortorici
and Kaleel Johnson
. Patterson and Mitchell also ran in the 100m dash with Patterson placing 16th and Mitchell 34th.
EIU's women's 4x800 relay team placed 10th with a time of 9:02.92. The relay team consisted of Erika Ramos
, Paige Biehler
, Erika Foltys
EIU had its men's 4x100 relay team qualify for Saturday's finals. The relay team posted a time of 40.60 with Patterson, Mitchell, Zye Boey
and Johnson making up the foursome.
